to be too young to be named to the Chamber of Commerce's list of "Distinguished Citizens." Then again, he started serving his hometown 20 years ago when he was elected, at age 28, to the Smithfield Town Council, likely the youngest person ever elected to that office. In 2015, after serving 16 years on the council, he won election as mayor of the town. Andy started his "political career" early on, first as president of the Key Club at Smithfield-Selma High School and then as president of the school's chapter of the National Honor Society. A 1989 graduate of SSS, he was a "Top 20 Senior." Andy says he "officially started his political career" with two terms as a member of the North Carolina State University Student Senate. In addition, he served as vice president and pledge master of his fraternity, Pi Kappa Alpha. Following graduation from N.C. State, he earned his real-estate broker's license and served as vice president of the family-owned business, Century 21 Suburban Real Estate in Smithfield. In 1999 he formed Moore Properties, LLC and continues to serve that enterprise as Managing Member. Meanwhile, Andy is starting his 19th year in the pharmaceutical industry, leading a team of 58 professionals as a director with Pfizer Pharmaceuticals in Rocky Mount and Greenville. (His job doesn't require him to leave Smithfield every day, so he's able to tend to duties closer to home.) Back to his community service: In 2001 he was president of the Smithfield Jaycees during a term that saw the club gain 20 new members. That year he received the North Carolina Jaycees' Outstanding President Award. As member of the Johnston County YMCA's board of directors, Andy was campaign chair for the We Build People campaign that raised money to send underprivileged children to YMCA camps. He has volunteered as a YMCA soccer coach and a girls' soccer coach for the Smithfield Parks and Recreation Department. He presently serves on the Centenary United Methodist Church Council. As a Smithfield town councilman and mayor, Andy has served on the board of directors of the N.C. League of Municipalities, the Johnston County Blue Ribbon Committee on Growth, Smithfield's Parks and Recreation Advisory Board, and he chaired the town's Economic Development Committee in 2013-15. He currently serves on the Johnston County Public School Innovation Council and is the town's delegate to the Triangle J Council of Governments as well as the N.C. Upper Coastal Plain Area Rural Planning Organization. This past year Andy was inducted into the newly established Smithfield-Selma High School Hall of Fame. He and his wife, Lydia Whitley Moore, have three children: Hampton, 17; Griffin, 15; and Whitley Kate, 12. One of Andy's favorite quotes is this: "Management is doing things right. Leadership is doing the right things." Toward that end, he says he strives "on a daily basis" to make decisions based on what he thinks is the right thing "for the entire Smithfield community." |
