Recreation and Aquatics Center

files six-month statistical report

Included in the "agenda packet" for last week's monthly meeting of the Smithfield Town Council was a statistical report from the town's Recreation and Aquatics Center (SRAC):

For the six-month period July-December, the center reported an increase in users related to facility rentals for various activities from 18,380 in 2017 to 27,924 in 2018. At the same time, SRAC memberships dropped from 3,153 in December 2017 to 1,710 in December 2018.

Dale Ham, the SRAC's director, said new software put in place this past year "gave us a truer representation of active memberships." Over the past year, he added, "we have introduced new membership rates and have seen an increase in memberships and facilities rentals."

Even so, SRAC revenues were down for the latest reporting period, from $328,191 in 2017 to $310,975 in 2018, while expenditures rose from $456,561 to $473,685.

The report noted that SRAC hosted a state gymnastics meet in the latter half of 2018 that brought more than 3,000 visitors to the center. The facility hosted seven high-school swim meets with more than 450 competitors and 1,500 spectators.
