AND THE ANSWERS ARE: 1. Poplar Creek looking downstream from Wilson's Mills Road. 2. Spring Branch above South Fifth Street where an entire block of houses were removed before the Town of Smithfield put a stop to the stream's chronic flooding. 3. Buffalo Creek below N. Bright Leaf Boulevard. Yes, this is the same Buffalo Creek of its namesake Greenway downstream. Doesn't look too good here, does it? 4. Meadowbrook Branch below South First Street where a block of Meadowbrook Drive was never built. Would it have covered up the stream? 5. Spring Branch below the Girl Scout Hut where a long sewage pipe was crossed many times by daring young boys in years gone by. 6. Unnamed "stream" that falls upon rocks as it tumbles toward the Neuse River below Bridge Street on the Town Commons. Actually, this stream comes out of a drainage pipe that extends perhaps a mile eastward, collecting surface-water runoff that keeps the water steadily flowing most of the time. And no, it's not an open sewer, although it occasionally emits an unpleasant odor for "Neuse Riverwalkers." |
