"POOCHA PALOOZA" OPENS THE NEW DOG PARK
The opening of Smithfield's Second Street Dog Park was made official Saturday with a "Poocha Palooza Dog Party" sponsored by Willowrun Veterinary Hospital. Folks not afraid to let their pets mingle with others came out for the event, which featured a ribbon-cutting ceremony and contests for "Best Dressed" and "Best Trick" dogs.

Smithfield's Parks & Recreation Department built the new park this past year on land next to the Civitan baseball field at the corner of Second and Holding streets, a block off Bright Leaf Boulevard (US 301 South).

For the ribbon-cutting, Mayor Andy Moore gave credit to Helen Daughtry for promoting the idea of a dog park in residential South Smithfield. She was assisted in the planning stages by the mayor's son, Hampton, who did his part as an Eagle Scout project. The mayor also thanked Helen and Leo Daughtry and the Holding family of First Citizens Bank fame for contributing funds to help the town pay for the new park.
