ENTERING THE "PORT OF SMITHFIELD"

A half dozen kayakers from somewhere upstream were observed pulling into the Town of Smithfield's boat ramp on the Neuse River on a weekday morning earlier this spring. It appears recreational boating on the river here is becoming more popular, especially since the new, improved boat ramp went into service this past year. The second annual River Rat Regatta, by the way, is scheduled for Saturday, July 13. That's the competition among makers and "sailors" of homemade watercraft fashioned from cardboard. Meanwhile, after a rainy spring that produced sustained flooding along the Neuse at Smithfield, recent dry weather has brought the river's depth down to just 5 feet or so --- well below our "flood stage" of 15 feet deep --- yet fairly typical for our prolonged summer season.
