GARDEN PARTY:
Community Garden officially re-opened
Volunteers have been working
steadily for several weeks now on restoring the
Smithfield Community Garden on South Fifth Street. A
ribbon-cutting last Saturday made its re-opening
official....
Brandie Davis, the chief volunteer in
getting the garden going again, lines up other
volunteers for Saturday's ribbon-cutting ceremony
(that's Town Manager Mike Scott holding the ribbon and
scissors behind the balloons).
Here's how the Community Garden looked
back in March after years of inactivity. The project was
started with volunteers a decade ago but had "fallen by
the wayside" in recent times.
A variety of vegetables has been
planted, and they're all neatly labeled for the public
to pick. Payment for what's gathered is done with an
on-site "honor system."

The garden sits
beside Spring Branch between Church and Woodall
streets.
