Anthony Council (right) of Smithfield-Selma High School has been selected by the N.C. Coaches Association to play in the state's East-West All-Star Game July 15. Here he's being congratulated by Smithfield Town Councilman Marlon Lee, a former collegiate basketball player who's 6-11 --- and a full foot taller than Anthony, who has a scholarship to play next season at Fayetteville State University. BIRTHPLACE OF LOCAL "LITTLE
LEAGUE" BASEBALL Smithfield's
Civitan Field between South Second Street and Bright
Leaf Boulevard is the place where organized "Little
League" baseball got its start here. The first games
were played in the late 1950s, and it was actually a
local "Little Tar Heel League," unaffiliated with
the international Little League made famous by ESPN
in recent times. The late-afternoon game shown here
is a contest in the "Midget League 9-10 North" that
matches up teams in Smithfield, Selma, Pine Level,
MIcro, and "old school" rural communities Corinth
and Glendale. The Smithfield Civitan Club started
the first league for youngsters here (hence, the
name of the field that's maintained today by the
Town of Smithfield). The Civitan Club has since
disbanded.
