Why don't our schools spotlight
achievements of their graduates?
Smithfield-Selma High's Principal David Allen saw to it that we received this past week a list of his school's honor graduates plus the Principal's List and Honor Roll for the academic year's final nine-week grading period.
We had to request that information, and we were glad to get it to share with our readers elsewhere in today's edition.
But we still haven't seen a list of Smithfield-Selma's graduating Class of 2019 --- a staple of local news that once was published year in and year out.
In fact, we haven't seen a list of graduates published anywhere for any of Johnston County's high schools this spring.
Isn't the celebration of high-school commencement the high-water mark for every school year? Why would it be overlooked by those responsible for publicizing the activities and achievements of our public schools and its students?
In the Digital Age, you'd expect to see such information posted on school websites for all to see. But I do not find it in Johnston County.
Even the quarterly principal's lists and honor rolls are never posted online. That's another thing that once regularly appeared in local newspapers. Now only sporadically do those lists appear in local print and online media.
We've been taught not to hide the light under the bushel, but let it shine!
