A scene from last year's inaugural event: Spectators line the boat ramp as a "team" prepares to launch an artistically painted cardboard vessel. Last year's regatta took place on a Saturday morning. This year's contest is planned for the afternoon.

The inaugural Smithfield "River Rat Regatta" was a big success last summer with more than 30 two-person crews nursing their cardboard vessels a short distance down the Neuse River from the boat ramp to the Market Street bridge.

This year the Smithfield Parks and Recreation Department has moved the starting time to the afternoon: at 4 p.m. Saturday, July 13.
