Mountains-to-Sea Trail birthday event will include segment on Smithfield's greenway

Smithfield's Buffalo Creek Greenway, including the Neuse Riverwalk, will be one of 27 sites celebrating the 42nd birthday of North Carolina's Mountains-to-Sea Trail (MST) September 6-8.

Smithfield's event will be held on Saturday, September 7 from 9 to 11 a.m., beginning at the Bob Wallace Jaycee Kiddie Park on South Second Street.

"We will walk along the Neuse River in Downtown Smithfield, through a wooded area, towards the Smithfield Recreation and Aquatics Center" (SRAC), reads a description on the MST website. "This family friendly hike will cover plant and wildlife identification and local Smithfield history. The hiking path is paved and 10 feet wide for easy group strolling."

Hikers may walk whatever distance they choose, said Kristin Sasser, SRAC supervisor who's leading the Smithfield hike. The entire trail here is about three miles long and relatively flat.

There's no entry fee, but participants are encouraged to purchase a commemorative T-shirt to help raise money for the MST, which is still under development in many places across the state. In the planning stages is a trail extension from Smithfield along the Neuse River to a connection with an existing paved path running from Clayton to the Falls Lake Dam north of Raleigh.
