SSS hosting 16 high-school football teams
for "Muddy Water" scrimmages next week

Smithfield-Selma High School will host 16 football teams competing in half-field scrimmages during its inaugural "Muddy Water Classic" next Wednesday (August 14).

These so-called football "jamborees" are generally held a week or so prior to the opening games of high-school football across North Carolina.

Each participating team is guaranteed three 30-minute scrimmages. Some programs will play four times.

Participating high schools include North Johnston, Southern Wayne, Goldsboro, Southern Nash, Enloe, Holly Springs, Hobbton, North Lenoir, Cape Fear, Panther Creek, Spring Creek, Green Hope, Leesville Road, Fuquay-Varina, Southeast Guilford, North Pitt, and Smithfield-Selma.

At the end of the scrimmages, the event will conclude with two "marquee" matchups between highly regarded teams: Cape Fear vs. Holly Springs and Southern Nash vs. Southeast Guilford.

Admission to the entire event is $5, and spectators are encouraged to bring their own chairs since many of the games will be played on the SSS baseball, soccer, and football practice fields. All others will be played on the main SSS football field inside Charles Tucker Stadium.

Gates open at 4 p.m. with play starting at 5 and continuing till 9.

SSS soccer alumni will play reunion games Saturday

Smithfield-Selma High School's soccer coaches are inviting all former SSS soccer players to come home and play in a couple of alumni games this Saturday on the school's soccer field.

A girls' game will start at 7 p.m.
The boys will follow at 8:30.
There's no charge for admission.

SSS soccer dates back to the fall of 1987 when the Spartans began play at Smithfield's Talton Park. Later, games were played on the SSS football until a soccer field with lights and bleachers was constructed on campus.
