2nd annual River Rat Regatta, postponed
from July, will take place this Saturday


Two-dozen two-person teams have signed up to participate, but there's still time to join the competition.

Online registration continues until 3 p.m. Friday through the Smithfield Parks & Recreation Department. On-site signups will be allowed on Saturday.

Check-in begins at 2:30 p.m. Saturday. All check-ins should be complete, with all boats in the "Yacht Club" for judging by 3:30 p.m.

The race begins at 4 p.m. with boats beginning their timed runs in single file from the boat ramp to the Market Street bridge.


SSS, Neuse Charter soccer teams sign up
for next week's Neuse River Cup tourney


Teams from Smithfield-Selma High and Neuse Charter School are among nine teams signed up to compete in a Neuse River Football Alliance tournament next week at East Clayton Community Park.

They'll be competing for the "2019 Neuse River Cup."

Neuse Charter opens play against a team from the Down East Association of Sports for Homeschoolers at 7 p.m. next Monday (August 19).

Smithfield-Selma opens against local rival Cleveland High School at 6:15 p.m. Tuesday (August 20).

The two-bracket tournament continues through Wednesday (August 21), with the  semi-final winners competing for the championship on Monday, August 26.

SSS boys' 2019 soccer schedule>

SSS, Neuse Charter open volleyball
seasons next Monday and Tuesday


The Smithfield-Selma team opens play against North Johnston at 5:30 p.m. Monday (August 19) at the SSS gym.
Neuse Charter's first game is against SSS at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday (August 20) at the SSS gym.

SSS girls' tennis season starts Monday


The Smithfield-Selma team opens the season against Southern Nash at 3:30 p.m. Monday (August 19), followed by a match with North Johnston at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday (August 21). Both matches will be played at SSS.

SSS football season starts Friday, Aug. 23



Smithfield-Selma football players await their turn to compete in Wednesday's "Muddy Waters Classic" scrimmages held here. The Spartans open the 2019 football season at home a week from this Friday (August 23) against the team from Wayne County's Spring Creek High School.

SMITHFIELD RECREATION SIGN-UPS

RED DEVIL CHEERLEADING

We offer Red Devil Cheerleading for girls ages 5-12. The only time Cheerleading is offered is during football season. Registration continues till next Tuesday (August 20). Uniform cost should be around $50, which you purchase and keep. Registration is $25 for Smithfield residents and $50 for non-residents.


MEN'S OPEN LEAGUE SOFTBALL REGISTRATION

Registration continues through this Friday (August 16) for Men’s Open League Softball.  The fee is $475 per team. (The maximum number of teams is 12.) The registration fee must be paid before the season begins to be put on the schedule. Play will begin after Labor Day.


KINDER SOCCER

Kinder Soccer registration is being held now through August 23, with playing dates scheduled in September. (All our Kinder programs are for 3-4 year olds.)  They will meet and play 4 times in September.  As of right now, those dates are not set. The cost is $20 for Smithfield residents and $40 for non-residents.


BASKETBALL REGISTRATION

Youth Basketball Registration will be held September 9 through October 18 for boys ages 5-15 and girls ages 5-12. (Players' age as of December 31, 2019 determines playing age.) The cost is $25 for Smithfield residents and $50 for non-residents. Practices will begin mid-November with games beginning in December.
