Uncooperative Neuse forces
cancellation
of Smithfield's 2019 "River
Rat Regatta"
Rising water following heavy rainfall upstream forced postponement of the town's second annual "River Rat Regatta" a month ago. And although the rainfall upstream wasn't as great last week, it was enough to increase the river's depth and flow to a level deemed unsafe once again for the cardboard-boat race to go on as rescheduled last weekend.
Even so, that didn't stop one intrepid crew from taking their homemade craft out for a test run during what would have been competition time Saturday afternoon....
Greg Hill and Shaun Braswell of the Neuse Little Theatre's production crew took the "JCS Darius Rose" out for a spin, and it was a success maiden voyage, based on this and other photos posted by Meta Toole on NLT's Facebook page>
The "JCS Darius Rose," named for one of the NLT's founders who's still very active in the organization, was an "aircraft carrier" complete with toy planes launched from the deck (a couple of them can be seen floating in the river after launch).
The "JCS" part of the craft's name apparently stood for "Johnston County Ship." After all, it couldn't be the "USS Darius Rose" because it was definitely not an officially commissioned ship of the U.S. Navy.
To bad this year's "Regatta" was a show that couldn't go on.
Oh well, better luck next year. And perhaps we'll see the "Darius Rose" once more.
