SSS wins weather-shortened football
opener by a lopsided score
of 34-0
Going into last Friday's season opener, the Smithfield-Selma Spartans had won just 7 football games since the start of the 2010 season. Win No. 8 came with a bang: a 34-0 victory over Spring Creek in a game called at halftime because of persistent lightning in the area.
It was the first season-opening win for the football Spartans since 2007.
This is the 50th anniversary season for football at SSS, which opened as Smithfield-Selma Senior High School in 1969.

The Spartans continue their season this Friday night at Western Harnett, winners over Douglas Byrd High on Monday by a score of 24-20.

Mountains-to-Sea Trail birthday walk
on Smithfield's greenway a week away
Smithfield's
part in a statewide 42nd birthday celebration of North
Carolina's Mountains-to-Sea Trail is set for Saturday,
September 7.Local folks are invited to join walkers between 9 and 11 a.m., beginning at the Bob Wallace Jaycee Kiddie Park on South Second Street.
Smithfield's 3-mile-long Buffalo Creek Greenway is designated as a segment of the "MST."
There's no entry fee to take part. Instead, walkers are encouraged to purchase a commemorative T-shirt to help raise money for the MST, which is still under development in many places across the state. In the planning stages is an extension from Smithfield along the Neuse River to a connection with an existing paved path running from Clayton to the Falls Lake Dam north of Raleigh.
