Mountains-to-Sea Trail birthday walk
on Smithfield's greenway this Saturday

Smithfield's part in a statewide 42nd birthday celebration of North Carolina's Mountains-to-Sea Trail is set for this Saturday (September 7).

Local folks are invited to join walkers between 9 and 11 a.m., beginning at the Bob Wallace Jaycee Kiddie Park on South Second Street.

Smithfield's 3-mile-long Buffalo Creek Greenway is designated as a segment of the "MST."

There's no entry fee to take part. Instead, walkers are encouraged to purchase a commemorative T-shirt to help raise money for the MST, which is still under development in many places across the state. In the planning stages is an extension from Smithfield along the Neuse River to a connection with an existing paved path running from Clayton to the Falls Lake Dam north of Raleigh.
