50th anniversary Homecoming festivities
planned for Friday's SSS football game
Smithfield-Selma High School is planning for a special Homecoming in conjunction with this Friday's football game versus North Johnston. Organizers have invited "many Alumni Homecoming Queens" to take part in the crowning of this year's queen and king during the game's halftime break.
Prior to the game, alumni are being encouraged to tailgate in the parking lot at Charles Tucker Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Members of the first SSS graduating glass of 1970 will serve as "honorary captains" for the coin toss at the start of the game.
The mayors of both Smithfield and Selma have issued a joint proclamation celebrating the event. It states, in part: "SSS is a collaboration between the Town of Smithfield and the Town of Selma and we recognize that SSS has played an important role in developing the talents of our young people through the years."
Meanwhile, Smithfield Town Councilman Marlon Lee, a SSS grad, has launched a "$50 for #50yearSSS Challenge Campaign" encouraging alumni to come to the game and donate 50 bucks into their school year's bucket. The campaign will continue throughout the school year, said Deanna Morris, one of the organizers of an ongoing celebration of the 50th anniversary of Smithfield-Selma Senior High's opening in 1969.
The SSS athletic department has partnered with Classic Ford for a "Drive 4 Your School" fund-raiser before the game on Friday. From 1:30 till 8:30 p.m. a variety of vehicles will be set up in a parking lot near the stadium. "SSS Athletics will get $20 for every test drive," Ms. Morris said.
Back to the game at hand:
The 3-A Spartans are looking for their second win of the season. After shutting out 2-A Spring Creek 34-0 in their storm-shortened opening game, they lost the next two on the road --- to 3-A Western Harnett 24-6 and 2-A Wilson Beddingfield 32-6.
The 2-A North Johnston Panthers are 0-3, having lost to Red Springs 42-0, Rosewood 46-24, and James Kenan 17-0.
