50th anniversary SSS Homecoming drew "very large" crowd, and numerous queens
Smithfield-Selma High School's Homecoming celebration turned out to be more special than usual this year, thanks to organizers of the school's ongoing 50th anniversary celebration.
"The crowd was very large, I'd say the largest in the last many years," SSS Principal David Allen told the Sun. "We believe there were nearly 2,000 there," counting ticket sales plus volunteers and organizers who were admitted free of charge.
Of course, the "crowning" moment of Homecoming was the naming of this year's Queen: senior Jennifer Guerrero. She was accompanied by a Homecoming Court made up of freshmen Anaya Sanders and Tyler James Youngblood Bodrick, sophomores Andrea Guzman and Chyshawn Ellis, juniors Lorena Garcia and Owen Gardner, seniors Natalie Aleman, Anna Grace Brown, Anna Makey, Makenna Turnage, Xavier Hercules, Ivan Lopez Arredondo, Bryan Villanueva Lopez, Dannys Ayala, and Jaiden Stokes, who was named Homecoming King.
They were joined on the field at halftime by Alumni Queens who were able to attend: Marcia Creech Park (1972), Nancy Radford Frazier (1973), Pam Bite (1975), Debra Raynor (1976), Tammy Renfrow Dunn (1979), Pam Renfrow (1981), Karen Corbett McCann (1983), Tanga Anderson-Solomon (1984), Monica Watson Neal (1991), Amy Allen Taylor (1993), Katie Bryant Barefoot (1996), Amanda Warren Lee (1998), Virginia Hocutt (1999), Stephanie Wheeler (2001), Britney Moore Dent (2005), Casey Weaver (2010), and Aleiyah Sanders (2011).
The Spartans hosted the Panthers from North Johnston High School for the football game. It was a back-and-forth affair until the Panthers pulled way to win 29-15.
"It was a great game --- competitive to say the least," Principal Allen said. "I wish we'd won as well, but alas, we will stay focused for the next win. The boys are playing much more competitively than in years past," he added. "I am proud of their work and I believe in them!"
The 3-A Spartans host the Pirates from 4-A Corinth Holders High School at 7 p.m. this Friday. (September 20). In celebration of "First Responder Night," all emergency personnel who wear a uniform or show an ID will be admitted free of charge.
