Big boys play ball with little boys & girls
on Smithfield's Miracle League Field
Campbell University's baseball team has "adopted" the kids who play ball for the Miracle League of Johnston County. Actually, the Campbell team has been helping out since the local league's founding by Monty McLamb (a Campbell grad) almost 10 years ago.
The baseball Camels returned to Smithfield this past Saturday for their annual pilgrimage to help kids with all sorts of handicaps hit the ball and run the bases before an enthusiastic and encouraging band of spectators....

No matter how hard or soft they hit the ball, or whether they could make it on their own or required some help from a friend, every kid got to "run" all the bases, advancing with each batter until they touched home plate. |
Learning good sportsmanship, the players with their Campbell coaches slapped hands with their opponents at the end of the game --- just like the big boys do....
The Miracle League of Johnston County will take this weekend off, then resume play in October with games starting at 9 a.m. on the first three Saturdays of the month.
Miracle League Field is a component of Smithfield Community Park beside Smithfield-Selma High School. It was completed a year ago following a fund-raising campaign coordinated by the Partnership for Children of Johnston County.
