Smithfield native Norvell Lee named
to N.C. high-school athletic Hall of Fame

The late Norvell Lee --- a successful basketball coach who was born and raised in Smithfield --- is one of eight persons who will join the N.C. High School Athletic Association's 2020 Hall of Fame.

Induction of the association's 34th Hall of Fame class is scheduled for Saturday, April 18, 2000 at the Embassy Suites in Cary. Tickets to the event are $50 and will go on sale in the coming weeks.

Mr. Lee, who played basketball under Coach Reginald Ennis at Smithfield's African-American high school during segregation, succeeded as head coach and athletic director at Goldsboro High School and several other schools before advancing to the collegiate ranks in 1994 at St. Augustine's College in Raleigh.

From 1958 through 1969 he was a teacher and basketball coach at three high schools --- Swift Creek, Sampson, and Dillard --- where his teams won seven conference championships and finished as 1968 runners-up in state competition among African-American schools.

In 1969 Coach Lee joined the staff at Goldsboro High as athletic director, teacher, and basketball coach. During his 26 years there, his teams compiled a record of 455 wins and 133 losses, including 19 conference championships and a 4-A state runner-up finish in 1983.

He coached the East team in the 1984 N.C. high-school all-star game and was inducted into Goldsboro High's inaugural Hall of Fame in 1987.

Coach Lee passed away suddenly in 1997 after completing his third season at St. Augustine's College. His team won the CIAA conference tournament that year and he was named the conference's Coach of the Year.

The gymnasium at Goldsboro High School is named in his honor.
