 The western end of the old curve is a dead-end in front of several residences. Booker Dairy Road's dangerous curve is gone with the roadway's realignment Last weekend, construction crews completed the new T-intersection where Booker Dairy Road meets soon-to-be finished Ava Gardner Avenue. In doing so, they closed off both ends of the dangerous Booker Dairy Road curve, leaving two dead-end segments in place to allow residents to continue using their existing driveways. Those cut-off segments are accessed from Camellia Drive, which was extended to the new "straight shot" alignment for Booker Dairy Road (pictured below). Meanwhile, crews expect to have the new connector from Booker Dairy Road to Bright Leaf Boulevard near Wal-Mart ready for traffic by December. Once that's done, Ava Gardner Avenue will be the new name of the widened roadway that passes in front of Smithfield-Selma High School, Neuse Charter School, and the Recreation and Aquatics Center --- all the way to its intersection with Buffalo Road. The roadway heading west across the Neuse River from Buffalo Road will keep the name Durwood Stephenson Highway.  In the distance is the new intersection of Booker Dairy Road and Ava Gardner Avenue. The new street to the left is an extension of Camellia Drive.  Here's the southern end of the curve. The pavement connecting it to the newly aligned Booker Dairy Road will be removed.  Here's a driver's view approaching the new intersection of Booker Dairy Road and Ava Gardner Avenue. For the time being, all motorists heading east must turn right onto Booker Dairy Road. The new section of Ava Gardner Avenue beyond the yet-to-be-activated traffic signals is still under construction. |
