Adrian O'Neal is county's coordinator
of parks, greenways, and open space
Spurred by efforts last spring to acquire acreage for a future park in unincorporated Cleveland Township, Johnston's County Commissioners put money in the 2019-20 budget to employ a parks, greenways, and open space coordinator --- a new position in County Government.
Adrian O'Neal began work here last
Friday, Nov. 1. His annual salary is $60,000. His
office is located with the Planning Department in
the county's Land-Use Center.
"With over 27 years in the Parks and Recreation field, I have weathered many changes and have been a catalyst for change," he said in a statement on his resume. "I am not afraid to try new things to support a larger goal. I like to work with dynamic teams and see the value in others' contributions."
"I want to continue to make changes and create opportunities that have positive impacts on the parks and recreation community and its users," he concluded.
Mr. O'Neal comes to Johnston County after five years as deputy director of the N.C. Division of Parks and Recreation, a state agency. Before that he worked 20 years as East District Superintendent of the division, based at Seven Springs.
He is a 1993 graduate of N.C. State University with a major in parks, recreation, and tourism management and a minor in environmental science.

HealthQuest fitness walk and run Nov. 16
The 11th annual Johnston Health Gobble
Waddle --- a timed run and fun-walk event for ages and
fitness levels presented by HealthQuest Fitness and
Wellness Center --- is set for 9 a.m. Saturday, Nov.
16 on residential streets in South Smithfield.Online registration closes at 5 p.m. next Thursday (Nov. 14). On-site registration begins at 8 a.m. on race day, Nov. 16.
All participants are asked to bring at least five items of canned food to the event, or drop them off at HealthQuest in the Johnston Medical Mall, for donation to local food banks.
The event is "family, stroller, and dog friendly." Dog participants must be on a fixed leash at all times, and owners must clean up behind their dogs.

FRIDAY, NOV. 8: "SWIMSGIVING"
5-8 p.m. in the pool at Smithfield Recreation & Aquatics Center (SRAC). Free admission with four (4) cans per person of non-perishable food items "that will go to someone in need within the community to make their Thanksgiving a little better."
MONDAY, NOV. 11: TEACHER WORKDAY PLAYDAY
8:30-5:30 for ages 5-12; $25 for Smithfield resident, $30 for non-Smithfield resident. Arts and crafts, cooperative group games, swimming, and outside play (weather permitting). Participants should bring a lunch, two snacks, water bottle, swimsuit and towel. Pre-registration required.
SATURDAY, NOV. 23: COOKIES FOR SANTA PLATE
10:00-11:30 a.m. for ages 6 and up at the SRAC; $15 for Smithfield resident, $20 for non-Smthfield resident. Decorate and personalize a special plate (provided) to leave cookies out for Santa.
