Smithfield-Selma High finishes fall sports
season with only two conference victories

All but one of Smithfield-Selma High School's athletic teams finished the fall season without winning a conference game or match.

The school's teams compete in the Greater Neuse 3-A Conference with four other Johnston County high schools --- Clayton, Corinth Holders, South Johnston, and West Johnston --- plus East Wake.

The football Spartans were 0-5 in conference play (1-10 overall), the SSS boys soccer squad finished 0-10 in conference action (4-13-4 overall), the girls volleyball team went 0-10 (winless in all of its 19 matches), and the girls' golf team finished in last place in all its conference matches, according to MaxPreps, an online high-school reporting station.

Only the SSS girls' tennis team won a conference match this fall, with a 2-8 Greater Neuse record (2-14 overall).

Winter sports start next week with co-ed varsity wrestling next Monday (Nov. 18) at West Johnston followed by boys and girls basketball next Tuesday (Nov. 19) at Corinth Holders.

SSS JV football team forfeited final two games

Smithfield-Selma's Junior Varsity (JV) football team forfeited its last two games of the season.

SSS Principal David Allen explained: "Several injuries didn't allow players to return for the season. As such, it became a safety concern to play with lower numbers, so we made the decision to combine the teams for the remainder of the season. Clayton and East Wake were notified immediately of the decision so they could make alternate plans for their programs."

Mr. Allen said the Varsity and JV programs started the season with a total of 72 players and finished with 34 "due to injuries and holding students accountable to program expectations."

The Spartan JVs finished the season without a victory. Their first game against Western Harnett ended in a 6-6 tie.

19 football players made Academic All Conference

Principal Allen said 19 of Smithfield-Selma's football players qualified for the Academic All Conference list this season. The team's average GPA is 2.91, he added. (GPA is Grade Point Average, a scholastic standard for high schools).
