Johnston County voters will choose
county
commissioners, school board members, state
legislators, and
members of Congress in 2020
To get in the early stages of the "Presidential sweepstakes," North Carolina has moved its Primary Election to March 3 this coming year, with the General Election eight months later --- on November 3. Up for election locally: • Four seats on the Johnston County Board of Commissioners, presently held by Jeff Carver of District #1, Ted Godwin of District #2, Larry Wood of District #4, and Tony Braswell of District #6 (the other three seats on that board are up for election in 2022). Commissioners are elected by voters countywide but must reside in separate districts (see map below). • Four seats on the Johnston County Board of Education, presently held by Teresa Grant, Ronald Johnson, Peggy Smith, and Mike Wooten (the other three seats on the school board are up for election in 2022). School board members are elected by voters countywide without regard to place of residence. • Seats in the North Carolina Senate & House of Representatives, filled by voters in districts that extend beyond the boundaries of Johnston County (see maps below). As things now stand, Smithfield will move from a Senate district presently represented by Republican Brent Jackson of Sampson County to a district represented by Republican Rick Horner of Nash County. Smithfield will continue to be split into two House districts presently represented by Republicans Donna White of Clayton and Larry Strickland of Pine Level. • A single seat in the U.S. House of Representatives for all of Johnston and counties to the south of us under a redistricting plan awaiting final approval by a panel of three state judges (see map below). Smithfield is presently divided into two U.S. House districts represented by Republicans George Holding and David Rouzer. Under the new plan, all of Johnston would be part of the Rouzer district. In addition to those races, Johnston's voters in 2020 will take part in statewide elections for U.S. Senator, Governor and Lieutenant Governor, Council of State offices, and a number of state and district judgeships. The N.C. General Assembly has
approved this revised map for North Carolina's
Congressional districts. It puts all of Johnston
County into the 7th District, which extends
southward to the South Carolina line at Columbus
County and the Atlantic Ocean at Brunswick and
New Hanover counties. The map used for the 2018
elections split Johnston between the 7th
District to the south and the 2nd District to
the northwest.
The new map for N.C. Senate
districts has been approved by the N.C. General
Assembly and a panel of state judges. It moves
Smithfield and vicinity from the 10th District
to the south of us to the 11th District to the
north.
Revised N.C. House districts leave
Johnston County unchanged, still divided among
three districts. The 26th and 28th districts
split the Town of Smithfield.
